In praise of….the Guardian

Perhaps my favorite brand (if you can think of a newspaper as a brand, which i do) the Guardian is doing it right, both off and online. In times when print press seems almost archaic, they came out with the berliner – a crisp and innovative makeover which proves that you can combine top-quality writing with clean,  fresh contemporary design, and cutting-edge photo journalism. I’m reading it almost every morning, and can’t get enough.

Guardian

But not only the print version is fabulous, their website, GuardianUnlimited, is one of the most rich and compelling websites I’ve ever seen. Yesterday they won "The best newspaper website in the world" for the 2nd year running at the 10th annual Webby award, regarded as the Oscars of the internet. In march, GuardianUnlimited traffic hit a record 137.3m page impressions. (And they are among the very few newspaper websites that actually make good money).  R E S P E C T.

GuardianUnlimited, in smooth and enriching  concomitance  with the  print version provides an abundant  esxperience of education, participation, enrichment and fun.  They’ve experimented with, and applied the ideas of co-creation and consumer engagement long before these words became the web 2.0 buzz words. Take a look at their books section, their fantastic blogs and ‘readers recommend’.  For exapmle, every friday in the film & music section, there is a themed playlist of songs/tracks (new topic/idea every week) contributed and charted by readers, which you can then log on to the website and download. ans now, in the run up for the mondial, they started ‘been there’  – compiling a pool of information on the 12 hosting German cities -  hotels, bars, restaurants and others tips, do’s and dont’s.  Simply the best.
