Very interesting articles..I was very naive when I joined facebook but now I have deleted my account its interesting to see it from this side.
I got involved in an app that appealed to my obsessive nature and overtook my whole life...stupid but a fact.
The dev even added me as a "friend"...but then i noticed this "friendship" actually brought with it Google Analytics - tracking my every use of apps i had installed.
I think this is devious and for the gullible innocents ( like myself ) not a very nice thing to do-though why people think they have got this good friend all of a sudden heavens only knows. Perhaps this could be a subject you investigate.
"When devs add users as "friend" . "
Well thats my vent..will try to keep myself better informed about stuff now...thanks for your info its interesting.

Hey again, Asi.

Just left you a reply to your comment over on my blog. Wanted to be sure to say here too, no worries at all. I very much liked the challenge to all of us and I guess took it more to heart since it linked to my post.

Nice work again on this. It came in very useful this week. Good stuff.

And my compliments on your blog as well. Kicks some serious arse.

Really good stuff here, Asi. Thank you for sharing the in-depth analysis and insights.

The thing that separates Scrabulous from the rest of the pack for me is that it does more than one thing well.

It entertains in that it's a game. It educates in that you expand your vocabulary. And it keeps you connected to your friends through both the inherent game play and the chat window/box that allows you to have an on-going delayed conversation with them.

I think that is why you see such a high percentage of active users there. (I also have a hypothesis that the reason you don't see more installations and active users is that a) several people are intimidated by it - they don't think they have the vocabulary for it; and/or b) they don't realize this multiple-value equation of playing it.)

Also, I appreciate the jab regarding being "easier said than done." You encouraged me to more quickly follow-up my post than I was probably going to, so thank you. It's still very much a work in progress. Please continue to challenge, question and push the conversation.

Finally, my only thought of caution around, "Think of it as simple interactive tools to extend your campaign that, if done well, can help raise awareness and build some emotional connections between people and the brand / product," is that I hope people think beyond just extending their campaigns and think about how both sides will benefit from the application.

The only way to get to bridging the emotional connection is to do something beneficial / meaningful for people. If we're not doing that, then we just end up with more applications that spam our friends and create noise instead of adding value. There are already more than enough of those.
