Really nice post.

I'd agree with the point about the friends on standby, it seems that most of the time, we just speak to those that we see on a day to day basis.

Although, those other friends could always be useful and this is part of the appeal, that you may be able to contact someone that you have as a 'Standby friend' if you need a favour. I guess this is the appeal.

Very interesting Asi. I really enjoy the general analysis, but as a next step, I'd love to see a breakdown of 'people-types' according to who gets what out of social media. Yes, there are some that probably enjoy a little boost to their self-esteem as they 'collect' friends. And there are others (like me for instance) who find it a great way to keep in touch, especially with people I meet that I'd probably forget all about were it not for Facebook.

I heard a great story the other day about a bunch of students who weren't able to sign up for something because they didn't have email addresses. Apparently social media had eliminated the neccessity for them to possess email accounts. Fascinating.

I'm not convinced that 'digital natives' (hate the phrase, but there you go) will go through the same phases as we will, because for them it's just the way it is.

I also (sadly), don't think my mother will ever tire of emoticons.
