[...] Asi Sharibi puts it well: From a brand perspective you’re better off to reach out to as many existing fans as possible (these people already have a built in incentive to talk about you) and give them more reasons and tools to talk about you in a genuinely favourable way In essence, this then becomes pull rather than push marketing. It is about all the stuff I believe in: Community Management, building Tribes, making your brand itself a Social Object. It’s pull tactics that would seem to be needed in the Attention Economy: Add emotional depth to your marketing; engage people rather than shout at them; create bonds that matter at the Core. In essence: do stuff that matters to the people who actually matter. After all, the alternative is just shouting and releasing too much gas… Possibly related posts: (automatically generated)Update - One97 BrandWagonBrand Your BusinessHow you can change the world with social mediaWired Mama: Are you a digital mom?
Good post, but i must say that you almost completely avoid the mechanics of how blog traffic is generated. SEO, link exchange, guest blogging..

Stumbling across information source online is an interest-driven process. Unfortunately for some, it's not driven by some magical community conversational fandom.

Try posting all the information above in 140 characters. Blogs still have a place. Twitter is for sharing posts that we find interesting on blogs. Rarely do I find a twitter post interesting in itself - it's more about what it links to.

A popular blog discussing a brand is still hugely influential

I can't wait for Twt - the new Twitter - but with 10 characters, rather than 180. Not so much micro-blogging, but nano-blogging . . . i.e. blogging for the seriously conversationally and time-challenged modern man . . .

Asi, great post - but look in the mirror - your blog has stayed the same. no money making machine here. So why do you think anything has actually changed?

Looking at the big names (techcrunch and such..) we see capitalism as we see on the outside. we see small hungry guys try to be bigger and small old fashioned guys just continue doing their own (not letting Wal-mart change their being).

All is good - I think. I am reading tones of Blog posts a day using Google Reader RSS feeds, from guys all around the globe, and following some links and annoying comments on twitter too.
I think it all depends on the need - if I want to relate to some brainiacs (like you) I'll read a blog. If I want to check out cool links or sentence by sentence update from the Iphone 3.0 conference live - I'll get twitter like services.

Brand should continue leveraging technologies. Look how well they utilized blogs to stay in touch with us, their fans. would you imagine Google releasing a piece of software on 140chars?
