There are so many things that can be done before THE kick ass algorithm in the god-only-knows-what-that-means semantic web. Some examples:
- Reflecting on user intent and specificity, i.e. Search results for 'Ski' should provide different tool/feeling from search results for 'sony LCD KDLW46550 review'.
- Clustering of results, i.e. 'there are 35 commercial results, 20 academic and 2 from adult site' ;-)
- Community wisdom - as you say it's probably THE key but needs a bit of work.
